Surveillance Technolog - Haisu Wang

My view on surveillance technology is that it is a double-edged sword, with the potential to provide benefits and risks. However, surveillance technology itself is neutral and does not have inherent positive or negative qualities. Its impacts depend on how it is designed and used for what kinds of purpose by people and institutions. It is essential to ensure that surveillance technology is ethical and legal. And at the same time, there should be a balance between "individual's rights and privacy" and "public safety and security".

CCTV cameras can be an effective tool to deter crime and monitor traffic, therefore, people might be unlikely to commit crimes when they are aware of the existence of CCTV, but it only works in certain situations. From what I have observed, the misuse of CCTV causes new forms of crime, such as the illegal purchase of CCTV equipment、conducting surveillance, and blackmail. So, CCTV has somehow brought the violation of privacy, which makes me potentially wary and uncomfortable with it.

I feel like people who like to take selfies should be especially aware of facial recognition technology. This is because FRT can use images of a person's face, including those taken in a selfie, to identify and track that person without their permission. On the other hand, FRT, its accuracy is unstable when put into use, and quite a lack of related laws and regulations. In conclusion, we should be really cautious about each device and application that may have access to our images and data.

I don't mind microchips in products, but consumer data used for marketing purposes can be a big problem when shared between all companies in the same industry. As I know, it's common for companies to sell customers' shopping habits and customers profiles and thus recommend more expensive products. But this could lead to millions of people falling into the trap of consumerism, and I am one of them.

My overall attitude towards number plate recognition is positive as this technology can be used for various purposes, like identifying stolen vehicles, tracking traffic flow, or toll collection. Most importantly, it can also be used for enforcing speed limits and I'm strongly against speeding, so it would be great if NPR could capture the number plates of vehicles exceeding the speed limit and issue fines.

And I felt that it was great to state your position towards surveillance technology at the last.

  3. Her essay is easy to understand and I can know what she thinks about surveillance technology well. I agree with her in the point about the treatment for customers' data in business. I feel scared if my shopping data is used by companies to know what I like without noticing me.

  4. I totally agree with you. Especially, I agree that surveillance technology is a double-edged sword but the technology itself is neutral. Personally I didn't realize that FTR can use identify the person from selfies. It sounds very dangerous and I hope legislation.
