Surveillance Technology - Sakura Iyama
I agree with using surveillance technology in moderation. First, I think it is a good way to avoid criminals. It is because I think people hate the feeling of being monitored anytime and anywhere. So, I think people do not do bad things in front of CCTV cameras. I think that surveillance technology is a useful way of solving street crimes. In my opinion, people want to do the thing that was just banned by law or something, but most people do not want to do the thing that was not banned but makes people feel bad or uncomfortable. That is why CCTV cameras stimulate the human instinct, and it warns the bad people that if you do illegal things or something bad, you will be arrested or ostracized socially.
In my opinion, surveillance technology is amazing, but I do not want to depend on using it too much. There are many reasons. I can give you an example of how it is very uncomfortable to be monitored by surveillance cameras anytime, anywhere. I think an example of this is a movie called The Truman Show starring Jim Carrey. He plays a character in the movie who is forever being watched, and although this is a fictional movie, I find it very uncomfortable to think that if it were really possible, people could watch everything.
Then, when people use facial recognition technology, people have to lose their facial privacy right, because people need to donate the information about their face. Secondly, microchips in products which feed information back to producers makes people feel terrible. It is because, in my experience, when I surf on the Internet, advertisements annoy me. The way of annoying me is simple, like the advertisement about what I was looking for before appearing on my smartphone. The reason why the advertisements appeared on my smartphone was the tracking technology. Therefore I can not accept the tracking services. Thirdly, I agree with using number plate recognition. It is because the technology is able to decrease the amount of jobs of police officers. The most representative example is catching the people who exceed the speed limit. The Truman Show

In my opinion, the benefits of these various kinds of technology is making people feel relieved. To feel that the technology watching over residents makes life better.
On the other hand, the dangers of these various kinds of technology is losing the privacy and liberty of people’s rights. I think some people prefer to be monitored by technology all the time to make life safe, but some people choose freedom and the right to privacy.
Do you prefer to be monitored or freedom and privacy?

I agree with your opinion about the various kinds of surveillance technology make people's life safer. What I like in your post is you have enough reasons or information to convince me.
ReplyDeleteI agree with her opinion. We should not use surveillance technology too much. We should use these technology wisely. Her essay was easy to understand and has persuasiveness, because she uses examples to reinforce her opinion. Also, I strongly agree with her opinion that it depends on individuals whether it is comfortable for them to monitor all the time. It is true that surveillance technology is amazing, but it is difficult to decide how often we use it.
ReplyDeleteI like the movie you mentioned :P But it is really hard for individuals to literally choose freedom and the right of privacy.
ReplyDeleteI strongly agree with her opinion. I would felt very stress if I was watched someone everywhere. However CCTV camera makes our life much safer than before so we have to thank to the technology in some reasons. And also I'm interested in the movie about monitoring. I'd like to watch it someday.
ReplyDeleteHi Sakura. I read through your post and I totally understand that advertisements based on your previous search are so annoying. They make me so uncomfortable because I feel like they are tracking me every single minute as long as I am online. I want to watch The Truman Show, it sounds really interesting movie.
ReplyDeleteIt was interesting for me to use film to show an example of surveillance society.
ReplyDeleteI would take freedom and privacy though it might lose safeties.
In my opinion, we can prevent crime by ourselves in a way that we can't do so in a surveillance society. For instance, possession of a stun gun, or using device which tracks your property.
You gave us an example of discomfort by being monitored, so I could understand it well. Surveillance technology is important, but I prefer to be freedom.
ReplyDeleteI prefer to be monitored by great technology, but I think we have to use it in the correct way.
ReplyDeleteI'm also annoyed advertisements on my smartphone. It might be good for companies, but I don't think it's good for us. By the way, you chose the picture of "The Truman Show", which is good example I guess. Being watched by someone all time is just weird.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, because I also feel bad and uncomfortable if I am monitored every time.
